The making of a nation from pulpification:
The process of making each Paper and Plaster piece mirrors both the way a nation is formed and how a sodium-ion battery works. In each case, the foundation is a cation — a positively charged particle that initiates movement and connection. My work begins with pulpification, breaking fibers down into their elemental form, just as a nation begins with location — the gathering of people in a defined space. In chemistry, the sodium element (Na) becomes Na+ by losing one electron, forming a monovalent cation that drives the flow of energy in a sodium-ion battery. Both the bond between paper pulp and joint compound and the function of a sodium-ion battery rely on principles of intercalation and adhesion, albeit through very different mechanisms and for different purposes. In my art, pulped fibers and plaster interlace and harden into a unified whole, much like individuals and resources unite under shared structure and purpose to build a functioning nation.
The revelation process for the generation of the population that formed a nation:
The stages of formation, identification, coordination, utilization, and edification are more than just steps in making art — they reflect the same essential sequence that both people and particles undergo when creating something larger than themselves. In nation-building, individuals gather (formation), recognize a shared identity (identification), align their roles (coordination), apply their abilities (utilization), and grow in knowledge and purpose (edification). In chemistry, sodium ions (Na⁺) in a sodium-ion battery follow a parallel journey: they are generated (formation), recognized by their charge and role (identification), guided through an electrolyte pathway (coordination), deliver stored energy (utilization), and maintain system stability over cycles (edification). Both systems — whether human or molecular — rely on structured progression, purposeful interaction, and bonds strong enough to create stability and function over time.
An explanation:
A nation is born from the union of its location and population, just as my art is born from the process of pulpification — the breaking down of fibers to create something new. In both cases, the foundation lies in transformation and connection. A sodium-ion battery, like a nation, is built on the power of charged movement: the Na⁺ ion, formed from a cation, holds and delivers the energy that drives the whole system. In my work, the paper pulp and plaster bond to store and release their own kind of power — the potential for form, texture, and meaning. Whether in chemistry, politics, or art, the process begins with raw material, passes through structured interaction, and emerges as something capable of sustaining and expressing life.
My personal revelation: The making of a constellation
In the map of my genotypes, I saw the same accord that binds Jupiter and Earth in their dance around the Sun. It was a revelation— tracing each SNP like a thread, revealing the fine strands I’m made of. These fragments mirror the celestial accommodations Earth and Jupiter made for the Sun.
